Take Me to the River
Philadelphia, PA
Located at the periphery of Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood, Penn Treaty Park is a unique open space and one of the very few publicly accessible, yet hidden, destinations on the Delaware River. With the goal of increasing the utilization of Penn Treaty Park, NKCDC initiated the Take Me to the River streetscape project. Interface Studio was brought on to explore potential opportunities to engage local artists in streetscape interventions and public art installations that would help guide footsteps toward the Park.
A narrative progression provided the study with a framework to structure and prioritize streetscape interventions. The critical opportunity was to capture as much attention as possible within the immediate environs of the Girard Avenue stop on the Market-Frankford SEPTA rail line, “hooking” potential visitors in the area with the most foot traffic and “reeling them in” to Penn Treaty Park on the Delaware River.
The study identified corridor-wide opportunities and site-specific conceptual visions that serve as a conceptual foundation for artists retained by the NKCDC to implement the project.
