    Germantown Avenue Master Plan
    Philadelphia, PA

Working with the APM CDC, Interface Studio completed a master plan for a three block stretch of Germantown Avenue in lower North Philadelphia.  Although Germantown Avenue has a storied history and is the second longest street in the City, this stretch is largely off the radar nestled between Susquehanna and Berks Streets.  It was once a bustling commercial street where Good and Plenty candy and Stetson hats were made and home to the Teatro Puerto Rico which served the community’s growing number of Puerto Rican families.  Today that theater is vacant and the only commercial activity is located at Borinquen Plaza – an APM CDC development that contains a grocery store, dry cleaners and credit union.

Our plan, completed with Mastroieni & Associates, sought to build on the street’s unique location between Temple University to the west, the center of Philadelphia’s Hispanic population to the north and the rapidly improving neighborhoods to the south.  The recommendations focused heavily on generating a buzz in the coming years to lay the groundwork for long-term infrastructure investments and new mixed-use development.
