Interface Studio

The Macon Telegraph featured the College Hill Corridor in their Sunday edition on July 3rd.  Born of a grassroots movement and driven forward by Mercer University, the City and an army of dedicated volunteers and activists, what was once a master plan completed by Interface Studio is now a series of implemented projects and visible improvements.  “I think it’s been the best thing that’s ever happened in Macon,” Mercer President Bill Underwood said.  Since completion of the plan, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation ” awarded $5 million to the community — $2 million to create the College Hill Alliance, and $3 million to the Community Foundation of Central Georgia to be awarded as grants for residents who come up with projects to improve the corridor area.”  The College Hill Alliance, supported by Mercer University, the College Hill Corridor Commission, Historic Macon Foundation and the City of Macon have since spearheaded new mixed-use development; rehabilitated and developed new infill housing; attracted new businesses; installed traffic calming measures including Macon’s first bike sharrows; planted new trees and community gardens; expanded the 2nd Sunday Brunch; created an annual soap box derby and; developed a student guide to Mercer to name just a few ongoing initiatives.  Recently, College Street received funding for streetscape improvements and a plan is in place to improve Tattnall Square.  Major kudos to Macon for their creativity and success!
