Lower Lancaster Revitalization plan
The Lower Lancaster Revitalization plan is a comprehensive, resident-driven effort to improve the quality of life for residents in the neighborhoods surrounding lower Lancaster Avenue in West Philadelphia. This plan builds on and updates the existing West Powelton/Saunders Park Neighborhood Plan completed in 2004 and expands its focus to include parts of the Mill Creek, Belmont, and Mantua neighborhoods. The new plan will provide a venue for neighborhood residents and stakeholders to take stock of the changes, successes, and challenges that have been encountered since the last plan, and to establish a renewed vision for improving the quality of life, built environment, economy and access to resources in the community.
As a first step in gaining input from local residents and business owners, Interface Studio is working with the plan’s sponsor the People’s Emergency Center to create an “Open House” along Lancaster Avenue. The open house is temporarily transforming a vacant storefront church into an exhibit on Lower Lancaster and surrounding communities. Interactive maps and exercises will fill the space to encourage residents to share their ideas and insights on Lancaster Avenue and their community. New “Make Your Mark” signage, an art installation on the upper floors and a liberal amount of chalkboard paint will be used to draw attention to the building and encourage residents to drop in and share their thoughts.
The open house launches Friday September 30th from 6:00-9:00 to coincide with the Look! On Lancaster Avenue arts project which will be running from September 30th through November 30th.
