Industrial Lands Study, Philadelphia, PA
Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC), the Philadelphia City Planning Commission (PCPC), and the Philadelphia Department of Commerce are curious. As the national economy continues to shift away from manufacturing toward information and services, they would like to know what’s happening on the industrial lands of our city – once the greatest and most diversified manufacturing center on the planet, known as the Workshop of the World. For the next two months, we’ll be out and about conducting a field survey of 15 of Philly’s remaining core industrial districts and corridors. That’s over 15,000 acres and 23,000 parcels.
Beyond their curiosity about what’s currently transpiring on the City’s industrial lands, PIDC, PCPC, and the Commerce Department want to know what could be occurring on land that was once industrial but currently vacant. What and where are the opportunities? Where should industrial activities be protected, welcomed, and encouraged? Where would it be best to invite new interpretations of productive land uses to take root, and what might those uses be?
For this massive endeavor, we’re sub-consultants to Economic Research Associates (ERA) and teamed with the Institute for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC), DMJM Harris, and CHPlanning as well.
